High School (IGCSE)

Grades 9 and 10

High school at the ISM begins in grade 9.  In grades 9 and 10 the students prepare for the IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) examinations which are taken at the end of 10th grade. The IGCSE is a world recognized programme offered by the University of Cambridge. More than 10,000 students in over 160 countries participate in the program. When specific criteria is met the IGCSE certificate is also recognized in Bavaria as equivalent to the “Mittlere Reife”. In addition to the examination subjects of English, German, Mathematics, Geography,Combined Science (with optional Spanish) the student also study Music, Physical Education, Art and Global Perspectives.

This balanced and challenging curriculum prepares students to participate in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in grades 11 and 12.

High School (IB DP)

Grades 11 and 12

Students in grades 11 and 12 participate in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP). The IB DP is an academically rigorous internationally recognized two year program. Many universities around the world often prefer IB graduates over other applicants due to the nature of the critical thinking and inquiry based skills supported throughout the course. Meeting specific criteria, the IB Diploma is recognized as a German Abitur (see link below).

Participants in the Diploma Programme take 6 academically challenging classes covering all areas of study (Languages, Social Sciences, Mathematics, Experimental Sciences and the Arts) as well as completing a two-year programme of creative projects, physical activity and service for the local and global community (CAS), writing a significant academic essay on a subject of their choice and following a course designed to foster those critical thinking skills that are so important in both further study and later life.

Besides preparing students for successful entrance into university, the IB Diploma encourages students to :

  • Become independent, lifelong learners
  • Develop a strong sense of their own identity and culture
  • Become internationally minded world citizens
